SIGA Polytechnic, Chennai, selected for Canada-India Project
The Government of Tamil Nadu has selected SIGA Polytechnic College, a Don Bosco Institute of Printing Technology, to replicate the Canada-India Institutional Cooperation Project (CIICP) under phase XI this academic year. Apart from the 3-year Government Diploma Course in Printing Technology which SIGA has been offering since 1973, this project authorizes SIGA to issue government certificates in skill-based training for non-formal students and as a result, these students would now have an opportunity of obtaining certificates that have global recognition.
This project envisages giving ample freedom within its policy guidelines to identify the employment potential areas and to conduct competency based skill development programmes not only to the students but to the professionals and industries. This year, nine polytechnic Colleges were incorporated into the project without any financial commitment to the Government. The Chief Implementation Officer and Commissioner of Technical Education, Mr. V.K. Jeyakodi, IAS, stated “This project has two human resource components: Teacher’s training and the Skills for the students”. He insisted that all 98 enrolled colleges should follow the policy guidelines of SPCU and assured that this project will bring about employability among target rural poor.
