Highlights - Day Two
Second day of the 5th National Convention

The second day of the convention began already at 8.30 in the morning with a short prayer. After the prayer the facilitator took the group through the programme of the day and also gave a summary of the previous day with the implications and indicators of concern / opportunity for the network. There was a good grasp of the reality as well as the possibilities for the youth with regard to training and employment.


In the first session, Fr. Savio Silveira, the Director of Don Bosco Development Office, Mumbai presented to the participants the findings of the youth survey done across the country. The data gathered is about 200000 but the analysis was done for about 50,000 from 21 states of India. The preliminary findings already are an eye opener to our target group and their present situation, their aspirations with regard to training and employment etc. The group also was very interested in the findings and opportunities that we have in the present situation. The network is looking ahead to completing this project at the earliest.



The Keynote address for the Convention was then delivered by Ms. Sudha Pillai, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. In her talk she not only appreciated the contribution of Don Bosco Tech India in the field of technical and skill training. She expressed desire that there are more Don Boscos in the country to reach out to the vast number of our young people in need of skill training. The interaction with panellists was very informative and interesting. The information provided by panellists such as Mr. Sharda Prasad the Director General of DGET, Dr. Amar Singh from Ministry of Rural Development, Mr. Shailendra Sharma, consultant from Planning Commission was very interesting. In the discussions that followed there was an open possibility for networking and creating a partnership between the Government and Don Bosco Tech India in regard to Skill Training. There was discussed many opportunities and challenges related to skill training and options for working together towards quality training for larger quantity. The panel was moderated by Fr. A M Jose the national coordinator for the Don Bosco Tech India Network. The session before lunch was a possibility of interaction with multilateral and bilateral agencies and financial agencies. The presentations and interactions with Mr. Manfred Haebig from GTZ, Mr. A G Alai from SIDBI and r. Nalin Jena from World Bank was received with much interest from the participants. This session moderated by Bro. Cyriac Kurias highlighted the roles of these organisations in the areas of skill development and livelihood for the youth and the rural poor.



The post lunch session consisted of a panel with Mr. Rituparna Chakraborty from Teamlease, Mr. Shveta Bakshi from Youthreach and Fr. Bosco John from Vazhikatti, Chennai. These groups presented the success experiences in networking and placement experiences. The information and strategies by the various organisations towards youth development and placement was found to be very useful for the network. This has opened up further possibilities towards collaboration so that the youth has livelihood options they can access.



The many interactive sessions did not deter the group from getting together to begin the process of discussions towards evolving a strategy for the network for the future. The day was full with information on opportunities and challenges and fuller with hopes and plans as well.
