Brief History of the Technical Institution:
Don Bosco Anbu Illam (DBAI) is a registered Social Service Organization rendering direct services to the street and working children and vagrant children of the city of Chennai. This is done through Street contacts, Shelter Homes and Rehabilitation Services.

Don Bosco Anbu Illam, a Home Away From Home (Boys Town) is located at Kavarapettai, 40 Kms away from the city of Chennai. On 14th January 1994, the birthday of Fr. Sean Mcferran SDB, the foundation stone which was blessed by Mother Teresa, was laid by Rev. Sean Mcferran SDB, the President of WE CARE organization in Belfast in the presence of Rev.Fr. Vallabaraj SDB, Vice Provincial of Chennai Province. A project proposal for Don Bosco Anbu Illam was prepared and given to Rev. Fr. Karl Oerder SDB, the mission Procurator of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Germany.

The Shelter Home (Don Bosco Anbu Illam) was started in 1997 by the Salesian Province of Chennai. It caters to more than one category of street and working children, but the focus is on the specific groups of children. It is unique centre in Tamilnadu.

The Target Group of the project:

  • Destitute Children
  • Run away Children
  • Children of pavement and slum dwellers
  • Rag – packing Children
  • Shoe – shines
  • Unauthorized porters at Railway station & Markets
  • Station hands
  • Vendors
  • Errands boys (Children in law Conflicts)
  • Helpers at the parking lots
  • Pimps
  • Children of lepers / Commercial Sex workers.
  • School Dropouts
  • Children from remand Homes
  • Boys who are disowned by their parents
  • Children of Sri Lankan Refugees
  • Prisoners’ Children
  • Children under difficult situations (Uncontrollable children)
A number of researches have proved that these children are pushed to streets because of the numerous problems in their families. Children who are not able to face the problems at home runaway and begin to live on the streets and platforms. “Our Home Away from Home” is designed for these types of boys. It is a place of rehabilitation where the children are placed in an ideal family setting wherein they experience love, care and concern, which help in the all – round development of their personality. This home has been designed to change the attitude of children who are violent, indifferent, vagrant and materialistic to one of loving, responsible and god fearing individuals.

It caters to their basic needs, realizing that they are developing individuals, having individual problems that need to be addressed and solved.

Don Bosco Anbu Illam – a Home Away from Home – is not just another orphanage. It is not a house for delinquents. It is a home where there is love, food, clothing, shelter and above all the warm feeling of security – security for those who have lived an emotionally scared and materially insecure life in an atmosphere of distrust, betrayal and shattered home. It is a Centre for Education and Skill Training. It is an expression of our belief that it is not enough to save a child from vagrancy and delinquency, but rather it is necessary to give him an opportunity to stand on his own feet and reorient himself to society. It is a place that translates kindness and concern, love and generosity into intelligent action designed to benefit those whose needs are the most desperate and urgent.

The Vocational Training Centre Section:
The Boys above 14 years of age are in the vocational training centre section. Boys who cannot study in a regular school but are interested in learning a technical skill are given training in the vocational training centre section. This technical institute provides five courses, viz. Carpentry, Welding, Tailoring, Electrician and Motor Mechanic. The boys are admitted in each of these courses. There are five trained instructors to teach them. These boys are given one hour of theory class and fours of practical. They learn by doing and this gives them a chance for practical experience. In fact they learn their trade properly with much enthusiasm because they know that what they learn is for their livelihood. Besides these five courses the institute also has a Water Service Centre. Here the motor mechanic students are given training to water service the vehicle of different models.

Future plan of the Institution:
The institution must be sustainable in the near future. Planning to update the present vocational training centre as training and production unit. Create linkages with Government or Non government institutions.
