“Prathiba Anveshana” -Talent Hunt at Hospet
Don Bosco Hospet, known as Don Bosco Professional Academy, is a non-formal technical training institute which is in its twenty-second year. It is imparting training in Electricals (House-Wiring & Motor Re-Winding), Electronics (T.V. & Radio Repairing), Tailoring, Welding & Fabrication, Carpentry and Computer. It mostly caters to the drop-out youth of North-Karnataka especially the youth of the Diocese of Bellary. This region, by and large is very backward in all fields. The institution begins its academic year on 1st July and concludes on 6th June. During the current academic year there are 108 students adding up all the trades.
The main aim of this institution is, while helping them to continue their studies, giving them some technical skills, so that they may become employable in this technical savvy society. This institution provides 20-month training programme for carpentry and 11-month training package for other trades. The institution issues its own Trade Certificate and Central Govt. Certificate from National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) from the department of Human Resource Development.
While giving them the training prescribed by the Department, the institution also aims at giving the student holistic training in both soft and life skill programmes. This now enables the students to face various situations of life, how to face others in the society and how to relate with others in the work area.
As part of personality enhancement, the institution conducted “Prathiba Anveshana” or Talent Hunt on 8th of November – 2008. This programme was held to enable the students to identify and recognise their talents. They had the opportunity to participate in musical and cultural activities through the day. All the students took part with lots of enthusiasm and eagerness. Though the students are from economically backward communities, their participation and performance was noteworthy. The discovery that they are able and talented has given them confidence and courage and the institution also realised that there is much already in each student that can be further developed.
The community of students is very happy with the management and the staff for having conducted this programme that provided a platform for exhibiting their talents. We are well aware that this is one of those programmes which has helped them to interact well with others while gaining their own self worth.
