About Us

Vision:
To reach out to youth of Meghalaya and North East who are “poor, abandoned or in danger” to prepare them to take their place with dignity in society and to transform it.


Mission:
We work together with the young to bring all their talents and aptitudes to full maturity to make them employable, thus increasing their economic status and contributing their share to local and national development.


Objectives:

  • Conducting NCVT courses in 9 trades
  • Offering long term and short term courses in 13 Non formal trades.(1, month, 3 months, 6 months, one year)
  • Strengthening the capacities of trainees through social and personality building skills
  • Exposing the trainees to various stake-holders in the field of employment and micro enterprise
  • Creating awareness among trainees regarding their social context
  • Offering need based short vocational trainings to the youth of the region
  • Networking with NGOs, CBOs and other stake-holders


Achievements:
  • DBTS Past Pupils are in all walks of life
  • Passed out trainees have been pioneers in micro enterprises
  • Govt. of Meghalaya recognised DBTS Diplomas from 1971, the year of the creation of the State
  • DGE & T recognised 14 trades in 1989
  • DBTS has been able to have close links with the Government of Meghalaya, Government Departments, Financial Institutions and Local NGOs


Milestones:
  • 1897 Origins of DBTS in a small printing press at Laitkynsew, 70 km away from Shillong, by the Salvatorians from Germany. Total Destruction in the earthquake of 1897
  • 1907 The Press restarted at Shillong with the addition of an Orphanage. World War I forces the departure of the German Missionaries
  • 1922 Salesians of Don Bosco take over from the Salvatorians
  • 1934 Technical training includes Press, Carpentry, Shoe making, Machinist, Motor Mechanics, Tailoring. These were conducted together with general academic studies, as there were no such facilities elsewhere. The courses lasted 5 years
  • 1947 All machineries were modernized
  • 1968 New Buildings
  • 1972 Government of Meghalaya recognizes 9 trades imparted at Don Bosco
  • 1975 Permission granted for the trainees to appear for NCTVT examinations
  • 1977 Recognition by NCTVT for 12 trades. Tailoring and Shoe making gradually phased out, and Wireman, Electrician, Radio & TV, Desk Top Publishing (DTP) added
  • 1994 The School was separated from the Technical School. Total of 14 trades Recognized by NCTVT
  • 1994 - 2001 Non Formal Courses introduced for 6 trades
  • 2001 - 2004 ITI Courses better coordinated. Non Formal Courses are better streamlined. Additional inputs such as Value education, Life coping skills, networking with Government Departments, Banks, Potential employers, NGOs / CBOs. A placement Cell is added to guide present and past trainees. Non Formal trainees are assisted to do the National Institute of Open School Examinations
  • 2005 Greater emphasis laid on Non Formal trainees. An Orientation Programme of one Week and follow up programme of 2 to 3 days for all the trainees. New modules are added such as aluminium welding, steel fabrication, plumbing, computer hardware, renewable energy. In service training of Instructors made a regular feature
  • 2006 Become partner with Don Bosco Tech Network
  • 2008 MES Course Introduced


Formal Training:
NCVT (ITI) courses in 9 trades


Certification:
9 trades are given certification under NCVT, DGE & T, New Delhi 13 trades ranging from 1 month to 1 year are certified by the Insti- tution, indicating level of performance
